WUXI, China – Team Type 1-Sanofi rider Joey Rosskopf punched well above his weight on Thursday to finish second in the opening stage of the Tour of Taihu Lake.

Rosskopf, from Georgia, was the lone Team Type 1 rider to follow into the last successful breakaway of the 142km stage along the scenic shore of Taihu Lake, finding himself with 12 others at the front amid dozens of attacks that he called chaotic and uncontrollable.

“The teams were all nervous at the start, and wouldn’t let anybody go up the road more than 20 seconds for the first 90 minutes. I attacked to defend at the front for our sprinter Serebryakov, back in the pack, and then spent the last half of the race watching the breakaway attack itself, because two teams had three riders each with us. At the end they all fell apart and I sprinted for the line and was good for second,” Rosskopf said.
